Grace’s 2009 Colorado Pronghorn
On the final day of Grace’s ’09 antelope hunt, the possibility of filling her tag was looking hopeless.
The sun was setting behind us. We spotted a buck and 9 does bedded in a tall CRP field about 800 yards away. They got up and started milling around. Our only option was to walk straight at them and keep the sun behind us, and in their eyes. We walked like a Chinese dragon, with me in the lead. The first 100 yards they didn’t seem to notice us creeping through the tall grass. At about 600 yards they started feeding at a walk like nothing was wrong. We managed to keep it even for the next 50 yards but we were still 600 yards away. The sun was slipping fast as I stopped to locate them in my binoculars.
I scanned the group, couldn’t see the buck, and that’s when I heard Grace say, “He’s coming.”
”On your left,” she said.
As I swung to the left I could see a head bouncing through the grass through my binoculars. He was coming straight for us. As I tried to get her set up to shoot, it became obvious that the grass was too tall and the bipod was too short. Grace threw her gun on my shoulder and I held as rock solid as humanly possible. Mere seconds earlier, that buck was untouchable at 600 yards. Now he was standing 75 yards away, ready for war.
I whispered, “Shoot him.”
Grace said, “Where?”
“Right in the chest.”
The bullet drilled him dead center and he tipped over. We sat back and looked at each other, finally having a minute to think about the unbelievable end to a hunt that went from being an unfilled tag to a hunt to remember.
This was the most amazing hunt I have been on. To have shared the experience with my wife was awesome. The antelope isn’t the 80-inch buck we set out for but you can’t use a ruler to measure great memories.
Hunting season is closing in quickly and the time to scout is slipping away. Here are some things that may help you make the most of the little time left to find that Pronghorn for your hit list. I always have this go-to equipment packed in my truck when I head out to scout.
